Story
The story goes back to the '70s, when there worked a farm called Totolco ; the land was acquired by the CEL and would later transferred to Jose Gregorio Martinez, founder of Club Deportivo Chalatenango. Don Gregorio Martínez was a close friend of General Carlos Humberto Romero, who at that time became president of El Salvador and also for his help was that the stadium was built. The idea was to create a sports complex, with the stadium, basketball courts and swimming pools, but this last one was no longer possible because the general Romero was ousted from the presidency in October 1979. The stadium was built with a capacity to accommodate 15,000 fans, with natural grass and a quite unique structure that originated his first name : The Hat. " The Hat Stadium " and allowed to watch the games of C D Chalatenango more comfortably. By 1984 held a vote to change the name ; the options were "Estadio Carlos Humberto Romero" ( El Salvador president who helped construction ) or " José Gregorio Martínez Stadium " ( the man who founded C D Chalatenango and fought to see the stadium built ) . When he opted to vote again, General Carlos Humberto Martinez took the decision to give him the honor of José Gregorio Martinez, His words were: " The truth is that I did the stadium, but Goyo was who gave returns for acquiring land and spent out of pocket. I just spent the money of the state. "
