Erik Sommer (born Minnesota, February 25, 1978) is a contemporary artist living in New York City. Best known for his work with unorthodox material,[1] his work is about the passing of time, chance, and beauty,[2] and is often compared to abandoned buildings, eroding stone or forgotten structures.[3] His paintings often feature material peeling off the supports, and are recognized for both their subtle aggression and delicate strength.[4] Sommer is represented by Rooster Gallery in New York.
Career
Erik Sommer has been exhibiting art in group and solo shows since 2006.[5] He has been represented by Rooster Gallery in New York City since 2010. His first solo exhibition with Rooster, Red Balloon (I Wish I Was A), took place in December 2010. His second solo show with the gallery, And Riding Clouds, opened April 2013.
In the autumn of 2011 Sommer participated in RAW, a group show curated by Adam Waymouth, at Pertwee, Anderson & Gold in London.
Pray To Fallen Skies, Sommer's first solo international exhibition, opened in London at Rook & Raven in November 2012. The show was produced by Adam Waymouth Art, and consisted of a body of larger all-white work that was displayed in two separate viewing rooms constructed within the gallery by architect/designer Tom Finch. Access to these spaces was limited so that viewers could experience the work unhindered. [6]
And Riding Clouds, Sommer's second solo show with Rooster Gallery, opened in April 2013 and included Apt. 4B, his first cement sculpture installation. Using found objects collected throughout New York City, Sommer recreated the living room of an apartment. The show received a favorable review by Robert C. Morgan in the Spring 2013 issue of World Sculpture News. [7] His next show with the gallery is scheduled for Autumn 2016.
