Eric Smith Middle School is a public middle school located in Ramsey, New Jersey, and includes grades 6, 7, and 8. It is the only middle school in the Ramsey Public School District.

As of the 2005-06 school year, the school had an enrollment of 785 students and 67.5 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student-teacher ratio of 11.6.[1]

It receives most of its students from Dater Elementary School, grades 4 and 5. It also receives students from Wandell School, grades K–5, in Saddle River, New Jersey as part of a sending/receiving relationship with the Saddle River School District.[2]

Awards and recognition

For the 1995-96 school year, Eric S. Smith Middle School was named a "Star School" by the New Jersey Department of Education, the highest honor that a New Jersey school can achieve.[3]

In 2006, a student at the school Sawyer Rosenstein was paralyzed from the waist down after a bully punched him in the abdomen. After a lengthy lawsuit, the school district agreed to settle for $4.2 million.[4]
