Eremophila longifolia, also known as Berrigan, is a shrub or tree which is native to Australia.

Description

It grows to between one and six metres in height and has yellow, orange, red or pink flowers between early autumn and early summer (March to December in Australia). These are followed by rounded fleshy fruits which are 5 to 12 mm in diameter. The linear leaves are 3 to 20 cm in length.

Taxonomy

The first description of the species was published by Robert Brown in 1810 who gave it the name Stenochilus longifolius.

Common Names

As well as being known as Berrigan, the species has a number of other common names including Emu bush, Long-leaf Emu Bush, Weeping Emu Bush, Native Plum, Native Plum Tree and Dogwood. Aboriginal names include Ortherrenge (Eastern Aranda) and Tulypur (Yankunytjatjara).

Distribution

It occurs in all Australian mainland states and territories.
