The English general election, 1661 returned a majority of members in accord with Charles II. This Parliament was called the Cavalier Parliament, since many of the MPs elected were former Cavaliers or the sons of Cavaliers.

Yet during the course of the Cavalier Parliament, there was considerable movement between Court and opposition, in both directions. 82 Court MPs shifted towards the opposition, while 44 opposition MPs moved towards the Court.
