The English Amateur Championship is an annual snooker competition played in England and is the highest ranking and most prestigious amateur event in England.
It is the oldest and longest-lasting snooker tournament in the world having been established back in 1916, 9 years before the World Snooker Championship. The first two tournaments were won by Charles N. Jaques, who was subsequently shot through the wrist in World War I and unable to defend his title again.[1][2]
In the 1925 championship WL Crompton achieved the first ever over 50 points, finishing with a break of 62.
Up until 1926, the finale was based on the aggregate points score from seven frames. However following a controversial finish in the 1926 final when Fred Morley lost despite having won more frames the format was adjusted to the present day mode in which a player wins a match when a predetermined number of frames have been won. Coincidentally this was also the same year that the professional World Snooker Championship was established.
After the Second World War, the number of participants increased, which is why regional preliminaries were introduced. A total of four winners of the tournament were later went on to become world champions including John Pulman, Terry Griffiths, John Spencer, Ray Reardon . Despite losing in the finals John Spencer, John Parrott and Ronnie O'Sullivan would all also go on to become future World Champion.
Alex Davies became the youngest winner in the history of championship in 2003 at the age of 15 years and 10 months.[3]
The championship is currently held by Ben Harrison who defeated Antony Parsons 10–6 in the final of the 2014 championship.
