Man 2.0 Engineering the Alpha: A Real World Guide to an Unreal Life is a 2013 New York Times bestselling book by fitness experts John Romaniello and Adam Bornstein.[1][2][3] The book covers fitness and lifestyle topics tailored to the male population including workout routines, hormone optimization, fat loss, and improved sexual performance, and includes an introduction by Arnold Schwarzenegger.[1][4][5]
Overview
Man 2.0 outlines Romaniello and Bornstein's principles on how men can become the best versions of themselves by naturally controlling their hormones to build muscle, burn fat and improve their sex lives.[1] The authors argue the majority of men's problems can be traced to hormonal issues, and lay out workouts and dietary strategies designed to naturally optimize male's hormones.[1] The book features a 16-week program, divided into four phases, each four weeks long. The program laid out in the book involves a combination of intermittent fasting, carbs and calorie cycling, macronutrient manipulation, and a targeted fitness regimen.[6] The book also focuses on the emotional and psychological attitudes of men that can be shifted to boost confidence.[4]
Lifestyle
The book attempts to re-define the "alpha male". Romaniello and Bornstein argue that traditional definitions of alpha males are unhealthy, as they are grounded in comparison to others as a means of self-assessment.[7] In Man 2.0, the authors re-define the alpha as being driven solely by self-improvement as opposed to competition, and intrinsic motivation instead of extrinsic validation.
The concepts are based around the author's 7 Traits of the Alpha Male:[8]
- Helpful — but not condescending.
- Confident — but not cocky.
- Vain — but not conceited.
- Prideful — but not arrogant.
- Humble — but not self-loathing.
- Tolerant — but not weak.
- Dedicated — but not obsessed.
Training and nutrition
The training and nutrition program in the book is laid out in 4 phases:
- Phase 1: Prime – Focused on improving the body’s sensitivity to insulin, using a combination of low-carb cycling and metabolic workouts that focus primarily on fat loss.
- Phase 2: Adapt – Set up to build strength and endurance with the result of increasing testosterone to burn fat and build muscle, Adapt uses of density-based training, and employs weekly cheat days.
- Phase 3: Surge – Workouts that utilize a total body approach and are designed to increase the production of growth hormone.
- Phase 4: Complete – Combining strategic aspects of the previous three phases.
The authors tested the book’s workouts and lifestyle advice on over 300 men prior to release.[1]
The book received endorsements from authors Tucker Max and Gary Vaynerchuk, actor Joe Manganiello, and Arnold Schwarzenegger.[9]
