Tenille Dashwood[1] (born 1 March 1989) is an Australian professional wrestler. She is currently signed to WWE under the ring name Emma.

Professional wrestling career

Training and Independent circuit (2003–2011)

Dashwood was introduced into wrestling by her older brother Jake, when she was about 8 years old. She involved herself in the Australian wrestling scene and did some training from the ages of 13 to 15.[1] In 2005, Dashwood made some appearances for the Australian wrestling promotion PWA Australia under the ring name Valentine. However, from the age of 16 to 18, Dashwood was limited to merely setting up the ring at events and helping out after she suffered a severe shoulder injury. In 2007, she moved to Calgary, Alberta, Canada for a few months to train with Lance Storm at the Storm Wrestling Academy.[4] Dashwood returned to Australia by September 2008, and wrestled there until February 2009 for promotions like Wrestlerock and PWA Queensland.[4]

Dashwood then travelled to the United States and made her in-ring debut for all-female American promotion Shimmer Women Athletes as "Tenille" on 2 May 2009. This was at the tapings of Volume 23 where she lost to Amber O'Neal.[4][5] At Volume 25, Tenille defeated Jetta of the International Home Wrecking Crew, but was attacked by the Crew after the match.[5] At Volume 26, Tenille lost to Rain, another member of the Crew.[5] Rain and Jetta defeated Tenille and Jessie McKay on Volume 28.[5] Tenille teamed with McKay again on Volume 36, when they made an unsuccessful challenge for Portia Perez and Nicole Matthews' Shimmer Tag Team Championship.[5]

Dashwood made her debut for the Canadian wrestling promotion Extreme Canadian Championship Wrestling (ECCW) on 22 May 2009 under her real name.[4] In 2009, Dashwood also wrestled for another Canadian promotion, Prairie Wrestling Alliance, as "Tenille Williams".[6] In Dashwood's debut match for ECCW, she defeated Nicole Matthews to earn a shot at the SuperGirls Championship,[7][8] but later lost to champion Veronika Vice.[8] On 1 August, Tenille defeated Vice and Matthews in a 3-way match to win her first-ever ECCW Supergirls title.[4] By racking up successful titles defenses in singles matches against Vice and Matthews, Tenille held the championship until 27 November 2009 when she lost it back to Vice.[4]

At the 19 March 2010 ECCW event, Tenille defeated Veronika Vice to re-capture the ECCW Women's Championship.[4] She then enjoyed successful title defenses against Vice, Nicole Matthews and Lylah Lodge in singles matches, as well as against Matthews and KC Spinelli in a three-way.[4] Dashwood lost the title to Matthews in a tables match on 26 October,[7] and went on to lose a title rematch to Matthews in December 2010.[7] Tenille's last match in ECCW was on 7 May 2011, where she was defeated by Matthews.[4]

In early 2011, Tenille returned to Lance Storm's Storm Wrestling Academy for further training, during which she became one of the ten trainees featured on the World of Hurt reality television show.[9] On 9 July 2011, at a Melbourne City Wrestling event, Tenille had her last match in Australia before heading to WWE and was defeated by Shazza McKenzie.[10]

WWE (2011-present)

Developmental territories (2011–2014)

In March 2011, SHIMMER announced that Dashwood had signed a contract with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE).[11] In July 2011, Dashwood decided to undergo surgery for her shoulder, which had caused her problems throughout her career.[12] In June 2012, Dashwood relocated to Florida, and eventually reported to WWE's developmental territory Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW).[13] She made her FCW in-ring debut on the 1 August live event, participating in a battle royal.[14]

In August 2012, Dashwood revealed Emma as her new ring name.[15] WWE went on to rebrand its developmental territory, FCW, into NXT.[16] Emma made her television debut on the 28 November episode of NXT, where she competed against Audrey Marie in a losing effort.[17] Emma debuted a clumsy dancer character on the 9 January 2013 episode of NXT.[18][19] From April, the goofy Emma began to rack up wins (over the likes of Bayley and Audrey Marie) while becoming one of the most popular NXT wrestlers.[20][21] On the 26 June episode of NXT, Emma competed in the NXT Women's Championship tournament to crown the inaugural champion and defeated Aksana in the first round.[22] She went on to defeat Summer Rae in the semi-finals on the 10 July episode of NXT.[23] On the 24 July episode of NXT, Emma was defeated by Paige in the finals for the NXT Women's Championship tournament.[24]

On the 7 August episode of NXT, Emma won a dance-off against Summer Rae to become the number one contender for the NXT Women's Championship, but Rae then attacked her to start a feud.[25] In the following months, Emma teamed up with Paige to feud with the Beautiful Fierce Females (Rae and Sasha Banks).[26][27][28] On the 18 December episode of NXT, Emma was challenged by Natalya for Emma's shot at the NXT Championship,[29] which was contested on the 1 January 2014 episode of NXT in which Emma was victorious. On 27 February, at NXT Arrival, Emma finally received her title match against Paige, but was unsuccessful in capturing the championship.[30] After Paige was stripped of the championship, Emma lost to Charlotte in a tournament to determine a new champion. On the 5 June episode of NXT Emma and Paige returned to save Bayley from an attack, from Summer Rae, Sasha Banks, and Charlotte. On 12 June Emma teamed with Paige and Bayley to defeat the BFFs. Emma returned to NXT on 18 September, facing NXT Women's Champion Charlotte, but came out on the losing end.[31]

Various storylines (2014–present)

On the 13 January 2014 episode of Raw, Emma made her first appearance on the main roster when WWE acknowledged her appearing amongst the live audience,[32][33] Emma continued to appear in the crowd on Raw and SmackDown that month, with tensions developing between her and Summer Rae.[34][35]

Emma with Santino Marella in April 2014.

On the 3 February episode of Raw, Emma was invited into the ring by Santino Marella to participate in a dance-off against Rae, which Emma won by fan vote.[36] In the following weeks, the feud between Emma and Rae continued and Emma eventually began teasing a on-screen relationship with Marella, showing romantic feelings towards one another on both Raw and Smackdown.[37][38][39] The two would finally face off in a match on the 24 February episode of Raw, where Emma would defeat Rae.[40] Week later, on the 3 March episode of Raw, Emma and Santino would defeat Rae and Fandango in a mixed tag team match, when Emma once again made Rae submit.[40] On the 25 March episode of Main Event, Emma teamed up with Natalya, The Funkadactyls (Cameron and Naomi) and Eva Marie in a losing effort to the team of Rae, Alicia Fox, Aksana, Layla and Tamina Snuka, when Snuka pinned Naomi.[41] On the 27 March episode of WWE Superstars, Emma once again defeated Rae via submission.[40] On 6 April at WrestleMania XXX, Emma competed in the "Vickie Guerrero Divas Championship Invitational" match for the WWE Divas Championship, which was won by defending champion AJ Lee.[42] The following night on Raw, Emma and Marella once again defeated Rae and Fandango in a mixed tag team match, with Emma making Rae submit.[43] The following episode of SmackDown, Emma became embroiled in a feud with Layla when she replaced Summer Rae as Fandango's dancer and valet.[44][45] This led to Emma using Marella's finisher the Cobra Strike, which she dubbed it the Ven-Emma, to defeat Layla on the April 21 edition of Raw.[46] In the beginning of July, Emma's alliance with Marella ended after he announced his legitimate retirement from in-ring competition.[47]

Emma returned on the July 15 episode of Main Event, where she defeated Cameron.[48] In August, Emma was placed in a feud with Alicia Fox, with the latter facing Fox in three matches on Superstars and Main Event, which Emma would win the first two bouts before losing to her on the 4 September episode of Superstars.[49][50][51] At Survivor Series in November, Emma participated in an elimination tag team match, where she eliminated Summer Rae before her team won the match with a clean sweep.[52]

On the January 28, 2015 episode of NXT, Emma announced that she would be returning to NXT as her tenure on the main roster had not worked out "as she planned".[53] The following week, in her return match, she lost to Carmella.[54] Emma began showing signs of a heel turn as she criticized Bayley in a backstage segment on the March 4 episode of NXT.[55] Emma confronted Bayley again on the March 25 episode of NXT and blamed Bayley's niceness for her losing to Becky Lynch. Bayley argued against Emma's statements, which led to Emma slapping Bayley in response.[56] On the following week's episode of NXT, Emma was unsuccessful in defeating Bayley during a singles match.[57]

Personal life

Dashwood has an older brother named Jake, who introduced her to wrestling.[4] She cites Stone Cold Steve Austin and Trish Stratus as her inspirations in wrestling. Dashwood met Stratus at the WWE Global Warning tour in 2002 when she was 13.[58]

Dashwood is in a relationship with Will McNamee, who previously worked for NXT under the ring name Mac Miles. They live together in Denver, Colorado.[59]

On 30 June 2014, Dashwood was arrested in Hartford, Connecticut. She did not appear on the episode of Raw that aired live that night. Police released her after she agreed to appear at Hartford Community Court,[60] which she did the following day on 1 July. Dashwood's lawyer claimed that Dashwood forgot to pay for an iPad case when using a self-checkout machine at a Walmart. The court ordered her to perform community service and an online course, after-which the charge would be dismissed upon her completion. This initially led to WWE releasing Dashwood, however they reversed their decision hours later.[61][62]

Other media

Dashwood regularly appears in the WWE web series The JBL and Cole Show. She made her video game debut as a downloadable character in WWE 2K15.[63]
