It is run by Sam Persi, whose family purchased the zoo in 1972.[2]

It is located 30 mins north of Barrie, Ontario, near Elmvale, Ontario. The zoo covers 25 acres. The Elmvale Zoo is a popular destination for school field-trips during the region, with the zoo seeing 14 trips during June alone.[3]

In 1996, four tigers escaped from their cages. Three of them later returned to their cage, and the fourth was killed.[4] Vandals were blamed for tampering with the locks to the cages. In 2011, the Elmvale Zoo was listed among other roadside zoos in Ontario as lacking adequate fencing for dangerous animals.[5]
