Ella McMahon (born 1 April 1994), better known by her stage name Ella Eyre, is an English singer and songwriter signed to Virgin EMI Records. She is best known for her collaborations with Rudimental on their UK number one single "Waiting All Night" and DJ Fresh on his single "Gravity". Her debut EP, Deeper, was released on 15 December 2013.[1] Her debut single, "If I Go", was released on 13 July 2014.
Early life and education
McMahon was raised in west London. McMahon is of Afro-Jamaican, Maltese and English descent. She trained as a competitive swimmer before she began singing professionally.[2]
McMahon was educated at Millfield School and the BRIT School for Performing Arts & Technology. Discovered by her management through a vocal coach in 2011, McMahon juggled school with song writing. She signed her publishing to Warner/Chappell in July 2012 and a record deal with Virgin EMI followed shortly after.
Music career
2013βpresent: Breakthrough and Feline
In December 2012, Eyre featured on Bastille's cover and mash up of TLC's "No Scrubs" and The XX's "Angels". Titled "No Angels", the song featured on the band's 2012 mixtape, Other People's Heartache, Pt. 2. In April 2013, she featured on Rudimental's single "Waiting All Night". The single was released on 14 April 2013 and peaked at number one on the UK Singles Chart, making it her first number one single in the United Kingdom. In August 2013 she appeared alongside Wiz Khalifa on the track "Think About It" from Naughty Boy's 2013 album Hotel Cabana. The song was released as the fourth single from the album on 17 November 2013. Eyre also features on Tinie Tempah's album Demonstration on the track "Someday (Place in the Sun)", which entered the UK Singles Chart at number 87 but was never released as a single.
Eyre was the runner up for the BRIT Critics' Choice Award, coming second to Sam Smith, and was also runner up for the BBC Sound of 2014 award. She co-wrote "Changing" for Sigma featuring British recording artist Paloma Faith.[3] The song was released in the United Kingdom on 14 September 2014. Her other notable songs are debut single "If I Go" and "Comeback"; the latter was released on 28 September.[4] In October 2014, Eyre won Best Newcomer at the MOBO Awards 2014.[5] It was announced in November 2014 that Eyre would be supporting Olly Murs on his 2015 arena tour. In May 2015, a song Eyre wrote, "Black Smoke", will be used by the German entrant of the Eurovision Song Contest 2015.
