Elizabeth O'Neill Verner

Elizabeth O'Neill Verner (1883–1979) was an artist, author and lecturer from Charleston, South Carolina. Her etchings, drypoints and pastels of Charleston are her best-known works. Verner studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and was one of the leading artists in the Charleston Renaissance.[1] She was inspired by two of her Charleston teachers Gabrielle D. Clements and Ellen Day Hale; [2] Alice Ravenel Huger Smith was another mentor.[3] She also made many drawings in Charleston and in other places around the world.

The South Carolina Arts Commission awards the Elizabeth O’Neill Verner Governor’s Awards for the Arts in her honour.
