Egypt competed in the Winter Olympic Games for the first time in 1948. The team had 2 members who requested and received a special edict of authorization from Egyptian King Farouk to participate under the nations flag, but with no financial support or risk in the event of their injury. The 2 members of the team were Marcel Nissim Behar and Ismael Nosrat (son of Egypt's Minister of War) who both participated in Alpine skiing in the men's downhill skiing event at the Olympic Trials in Are, Sweden. As of 2010, Egypt only participated one other time, at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia. The only participant in 1984 was Alpine skier Jamil El Reedy. He has the longest full name (as written in his passport) among all participants of the 1984 Winter Olympics.
