Edward L. Romero (born in January 2, 1934) is an entrepreneur and American diplomat who served as the U.S. Ambassador to Spain and Andorra between 1998 and 2001. He was also one of the founders of the Hispanic Cultural Foundation and the National Hispanic Cultural Center in New Mexico, the Advanced Sciences, Inc., the Chamber of Commerce Albuquerque Hispano, the Board of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute and of "Valor Telecommunications Southwest, LLC."

Biography

Romero was born on January 2, 1934 [2] in Alamosa, Colorado. However, his family is originally from Albuquerque, New Mexico. [3] His mother, in Southern Colorado, was a precinct chairwoman for thirty-seven years and she was even elected a delegate for Adlai Stevenson. [4] His family was descended in part of the Spanish settlers who arrived to New Mexico in 1598.[2][5][6][4] So, one of his ancestors, Bartolomé Romero, came from Corral de Almaguer, a municipality of Toledo, Castilla La Mancha, and settled in New Mexico in this year (1598).[5] His grandfather was a Fraternity brother of New Mexico.[2] His first language was Spanish,[4] but he currently speaks both English and Spanish fluently.[2] In his youth, he fought in the Korean War.[1][2][4] After of that, he studied at Los Angeles State College and Citrus College.[1][2]When he graduated, he moved to New Mexico.[4]

During the Vietnam war, he was particularly critical of the war, forming a group, with some others people, called Veterans Against Vietnam that eventually became an anti-Vietnam group. After the Vietnam war, he becoming in official of Democratic Party and, over time, he became the county chairman of the Democratic party. [4]

He has been a member of the Advisory Committee on Services´s Policy U.S. Representative for International Trade, leading some U.S. delegations to Mexico[1][2] and belonged also to the President's Hispanic Advisory Committee.

Interested in the environment, he founded the Advanced Sciences, Inc.,[1][2][6] a corporation of environmental engineering and waste management - recently merged with Commodore Applied Technologies, Inc., a company listed on Bolsa, which is also president and director.[1][2] In addition, was a founding member of the Chamber of Commerce Albuquerque Hispano and the Board of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute.[1][2][6] Well as of the Hispanic Cultural Foundation and the National Hispanic Cultural Center in New Mexico.[1][2][6] He is also one of the founders of "Valor Telecommunications Southwest, LLC."

In June 23, 1998, he was appointed by President Bill Clinton as United States Ambassador to Spain, being confirmed as such by the Senate on June 23 of that year. Furthermore, on 1 June that year, the former president also appointed him Ambassador to Andorra. [1][2][6] In 2001 was replaced by George Argyros as ambassador to this country.[1]

He was also member of the Federal Advisory Committee for Trade Negotiations and of the U.S. Delegations on the Helsinki Accords.[7]

Romero has been active in various social works, winning numerous awards and recognitions from various organizations such as Americans and Spanish.[2]

Personal life

He is married Cayetana Garcia and have four children[1][2] and eight grandchildren.[2] The ancestors of his wife also left Spain on 1898, but came from a region of Castilla y Leon.[5]
