Edinburgh Marine Gardens
Coordinates: 55°57′31.8″N 3°7′20.3″W / 55.958833°N 3.122306°W The Edinburgh Marine Gardens was a pleasure garden located on the shores of the Firth of Forth at Portobello in Edinburgh, Scotland. Opened in 1909, its attractions initially included a ballroom, circus and zoo, cinema and theatre, scenic railway, ornamental gardens and maze and a sports stadium.[1]
The Marine Gardens was closed down and taken over for military use during the First World War, leading to many of the attractions being permanently removed. The ballroom and stadium were among those which were retained; during the inter-war period, the latter staged speedway and was the home of Leith Athletic F.C. from 1928 to 1936. The area was once again required for military purposes during the Second World War, leading to the final closure of the complex. Since 1962, the location of the Marine Gardens has been occupied by a bus depot.[1]
