Edward "Eddie" Spears (born November 29, 1982) is an American actor. He is a member of the Kul Wicasa Oyate Lakota (often called "Sioux") Lower Brulé Tribe of South Dakota.

Early life

Spears was born in Chamberlain, South Dakota on the Lower Brulé Indian Reservation.[1] He has 5 brothers and 1 sister; his older brother Michael is also an actor.[2] Spears grew up on the Lower Brulé Indian Reservation until the first grade when his family moved to Pierre, South Dakota.[3] After that, his family moved to Aberdeen, South Dakota where he grew up and attended Simmons Middle School and Aberdeen Central High School.[4]

Career

Movie and Television career

Spears has been in the spotlight since age 10 starting with his first role in TNT's production of Geronimo, which was shot in Arizona.

Most recently, Spears played Big Ash on Episode 6 of Sleepy Hollow: "And the Abyss Gazes Back".[5] Spears played the popular [6] Joseph Black Moon from Season 1 to Season 2 of AMC's television series, Hell On Wheels.[7]

Spears has said his most rewarding role to date was Shane Chasing Horse in the film Dreamkeeper. When cast for the lead in the 2004 film Black Cloud (directed by Rick Schroder), he trained for three months with boxing trainer Jimmy Gambia to perfect his boxing skills before filming started. The film is about a Navajo boxer training for the Golden Gloves with the promise of a spot at the Olympics while struggling with the secrets of his family's past. One of the scenes was filmed in Las Vegas during the 2003 Golden Gloves National Championship.

Other work

In 2005, Spears and his brother Michael modeled for Cochiti Pueblo fashion designer Virgil Ortiz for his "Indigene" clothing line, and were featured on the cover of the August 2005 issue of New Mexico Magazine.[8]

Personal life

Spears co-hosted the 39th Annual American Indian Film Institute Awards this November along with actress Tonantzin Carmelo.[12] Spears attended and was a mentor at the 2nd annual HatcH Audiovisual Festival in Bozeman, Montana in October 2005. HatcH is a film and arts festival whose mission is to provide mentorship, education, inspiration, and recognition to the next generation of creative innovators.

Spears and his brother Michael have also been active with Native Wind[13] and the COUP (Intertribal Council on Utility Policy) Native Energy, of which their father Pat Spears was formerly president. COUP was formed in 1994 to provide a forum for utility issues discussion from regulatory and economic perspectives.[14]

Spears speaks Lakota but has admitted he is not fluent. He is an avid outdoorsman with hunting, fishing, archery and rodeo experience, and is a Traditional and Grass dancer. He also travels nationally as a keynote speaker. He currently resides in Montana.[15]
