Edward J. "Ed" Hamilton was a college football, basketball, and baseball player and coach. He attended preparatory school at Mooney School in Franklin, Tennessee along with Red Smith and Frank Kyle.[1] Hamilton was an All-Southern end for the first years of Dan McGugin's Vanderbilt Commodores football teams.[2] He stood 5 feet 11 inches and weighed 164 pounds.[3] Hamilton coached the Vanderbilt basketball squad in 1903-1904 and 1908-09 for a combined record of 17–5.[4][5]
Bachelor of Ugliness
One of the highest honors that a student could achieve was the "Bachelor of Ugliness," a title given to the male undergraduate student believed to be most representative of ideal young manhood an the class's most popular member, devised by Professor William H. Dodd in 1885. In 1906, that honor was given to Hamilton.
