Echterdingen Army Airfield [1] was a US Army Airfield operated on the southern half of Stuttgart Airport [2] and was used by the US Army from the occupation by the United States Constabulary through the Cold War. The installation was part of the Stuttgart Military Community and was closed following the drawdown of US forces after the end of the Cold War. The aircraft operated in support of US EUCOM and VII Corps and included helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft- including the Grumman OV-1 Mohawk. Some of the units operating at Echterdingen were headquartered at nearby Nellingen Kaserne- now closed and redeveloped.[3]
The US Army currently operates a smaller portion of the former Echterdingen Army Airfield as Stuttgart Army Airfield on a small portion of the same site.
