The Eastgate Shopping Centre is a shopping center based in Bedfordview, in the near of the Bedford Gardens in Gauteng province.
History
Eastgate was Johannesburgs first 'super-regional' shopping centre. When it opened in 1979, it was the largest shopping centre in the southern hemisphere. It remains one of the largest centres in the country, and is the second-largest shopping centre in the Greater Johannesburg Metropolitan Area, after Sandton City The centre lies next to the R24 airport freeway, between the Johannesburg CBD and Johannesburg International Airport.[1]
Stores include Woolworths, Edgars, Checkers Hyper, Ster-Kinekor cinemas, Dion and Stuttafords. A R300 Million expansion was completed in 2010, which brings Eastgate to 122 000m². It is owned and developed by Liberty Life. It is managed by Liberty Properties, on behalf of the parent company Liberty Life.[2]
Eastgate Shopping Centre is frequented by over 80 000 shoppers on Saturdays, over 2 million shoppers a month. The shopping center, offers Bureau de change facilities. Major retailers include one of the most successful Woolworths in South Africa. The centre's 250 stores include over 60 fashion boutiques and 13 jewellers.
Unusually for a single complex, the building straddles the municipal boundaries of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality, and Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, however, in 2013, the boundary was adjusted by the Municipal Demarcation Board to move Eastgate fully into Ekurhuleni..
