The East Fishkill Fire District is the name of the fire district that serves the town of East Fishkill, New York. The fire district has 4 main fire stations as well as two substations. They have over 300 volunteers, and 2 paid employees (non-firematic).[1] The East Fishkill Fire District is the largest volunteer agency between Albany and New York City, covering nearly 27,000 residents spread over 54 square miles (140 km2) within its jurisdiction. The entire District was and continues to be staffed all by volunteers.[2] The level of care they provide is Basic Life Support.[3] During large scale incidents such as a Structure Fire or mass casualty incident, departments that would provide mutal-aid are Beekman, LaGrange, Village Of Fishkill and Union Vale.

Stations

The apparatus run out of the 4 main stations, 2 sub-stations and district headquarters. The ambulances rotate between the 4 main stations on a weekly basis and rotates EMTS every 6 hours.

Hopewell Hose, is the oldest fire company in the District and began in 1912. As the area grew, fire companies were added which were strategically located to better serve the community. The Stormville Fire Company was started in 1949; followed by The Hillside Lake Fire Company in 1952 and The Wiccopee Fire Company in 1954. In addition to the four main fire companies, The Stormville Fire Company and The Wiccopee Fire Company also have substations which were started in 1983 and 1984 respectively.

Department Squads

Rescue Squad

The East Fishkill Rescue squad is a BLS ambulance service provided to the residents of East Fishkill and surrounding towns under a pre-planned mutal aid agreement. As the population increased in the mid-1960s, the need for an EMS squad in East Fishkill grew. In 1967, the East Fishkill Rescue Squad was formed, using a 1965 Cadillac ambulance to transport patients to the hospital.[4]

Present day the Rescue Squad remains 100% volunteer and accepts new members at the age of 16. Currently the squad has a membership of over 100 CFR's and EMT's that actively roster and respond to incidents. The district currently has two ambulances which rotate throughout the four stations (39-71 & 39-72). For Advanced Life Support requests, the district enlists Mobile Life Support Services.

Fire Police

The East Fishkill Fire Police were formed in 1961. The primary role of Fire Police is to maintain order at all fire department activities. Currently the Fire Police have a van as their primary response vehicle which contains barricades, flares, signs and all other items needed for traffic and crowd control.

Fire Investigation Division

East Fishkill is the only Dutchess County volunteer department to have their own in-district Fire Investigation Team. Normally all departments within Dutchess rely on the County to send Fire Investigation members when a fire is deemed suspicious. The team was planned in the late 1980s and was put into plan in 1989.[5]

Emergency Response

District personnel are dispatched directly by the Dutchess County Department Of Emergency Response via personal pagers. EFFD also serves as pre-determined mutual aid to many surrounding departments, in both Dutchess and Putnum counties.
