EastSiders[1] is a dark comedy web series which premiered on December 14, 2012. It was written and directed by Kit Williamson.[2] EastSiders explores the aftermath of infidelity on a gay couple in the Silverlake neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. The story focuses on how the relationship of Cal (Kit Williamson) and Thom (Van Hansis) is affected by infidelity and substance abuse. Cal’s somewhat unstable best friend, Kathy (Constance Wu), and her nice-guy boyfriend, Ian (John Halbach) are also featured.

Plot

The initial two episodes of the series take place on the day of—and the day after—the supposed Mayan apocalypse (December 21, 2012). Thom, Cal, Kathy and Ian all attend an "End of the World" party hosted by party promoter, Quincy (Stephen Guarino). During the event, Cal learns that Thom has been cheating on him with Jeremy (Matthew McKelligon). The question remains whether they will stay together or break up over the affair.

Characters

Kit Williamson portrays Cal, a self-conscious art gallery employee, with a tendency to drink his problems away. Sarcastic with a quick wit, his best friend is Kathy. After finding out his partner, Thom, cheated on him, he confronted the other man, Jeremy, only to sleep with him, too.

Van Hansis portrays Thom, a writer and Cal's boyfriend, who had a two-month affair with Jeremy.

Constance Wu portrays Kathy, Cal's nihilistic best friend who never trusted Thom. After briefing getting engaged to Ian (after six weeks of dating), she becomes pregnant and has an abortion without telling him.

John Halbach portrays Ian, Kathy's boyfriend that accidentally proposes in the second episode, then takes it back.

Matthew McKelligon portrays Jeremy, first lover of Thom, then one-night stand of Cal, who doesn't want to let go of that connection.

Stephen Guarino portrays Quincy, the group's friend and the host of the Mayan apocalypse party where Cal learned of Thom's indiscretion and Ian proposed to Kathy.

Sean Maher portrays Paul, Cal's boss at the art gallery, who takes a romantic interest in him, even though he's married.

Reception

The series premiered online on December 14, 2012 and a second episode was released on December 21, 2012. The series has received considerable attention from the press because it portrays gay characters but does not focus on the characters' sexual orientations as a major plot point.

Production

After the initial two episodes aired, the remaining seven were funded by a Kickstarter campaign. The campaign met its goal on January 11, 2013 and filming began in February 2013, intended for release in March 2013. The series is filmed entirely on location in Silver Lake, Los Angeles.[3][4][5][6][7]

On April 2, 2013 it was announced that the series would be exclusively distributed by Logo TV for posting on their web site. The third episode of the show premiered on April 23, 2013 on http://logotv.com. Each of the remaining episodes will be posted on consecutive Tuesdays. EastSiders retained international distribution rights and is currently looking for an international distributor since the show is geoblocked on Logo TV.
