The ESV Study Bible is a study Bible published by Crossway Bibles of Wheaton, Illinois, a division of Good News Publishers. It combines an evangelical commentary with the English Standard Version text.

The ESV Study Bible contains more than 2,750 pages of extensive Bible resources, including commentary, maps, illustrations, charts, timelines, and articles created by a team of 93 evangelical scholars and teachers. In addition to the 757,000 words of the ESV Bible itself, the notes and resources of the ESV Study Bible comprise an additional 1.1 million words of explanation and teaching.[1]

Purchasing the ESV Study Bible licenses the owner to fully access the online digital resources associated with it, including the bible text and audio bible (which are free to all who establish an account), along with the integrated ESV Study Bible notes, which would otherwise require a separate licensing fee.

In 2011, the ESV Student Study Bible was released as a condensed version, with the complete ESV Bible text, but abridged study notes, geared toward high school and college students--with access to the same abridged study notes online.

In 2012, Crossway released a similar abridgement, named the ESV Global Study Bible, which additionally includes articles applying "to global issues, such as the role of government, the nature of the church, world religions, social ethics, and missions and evangelism", along with licensing for worldwide access to the online version of the same content. The ESV Study Bible and its abridgements have been released for Amazon Kindle and in the .ePub ebook format, and the full blown version is available for various bible software programs, as well.

Reception

Commercial reception

The ESV Study Bible was first published in October 2008, supported by a $1 million advertising campaign.[3] Its first run of 100,000 copies sold out before the copies had finished being printed. Within the first six months, 300,000 copies had been printed in total.[4]

Critical reception

When it was first published, the ESV Study Bible was well-received, receiving endorsements from many prominent evangelical pastors and theologians.[4] Andy Naselli, writing in the Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society wrote, "No other study Bible matches the ESVSB in quantity or quality."[4]

Awards

In 2009, it garnered the ECPA Christian Book Award for Book of the Year, the first time a study Bible achieved this distinction.[5][6] It also was named WORLD magazine's Book of the Year in 2009.[7]
