ESCP Europe is a business school with campuses in Paris, London, Berlin, Madrid, and Turin. Established in 1819, it is the oldest business school in the world. ESCP is one of the most important and prestigious business school in the world.[1] Two years in a row, in 2012 and 2013, its Master in Management program was ranked 2nd in the world by the British newspaper, The Financial Times.[2][3] Its programmes are triple-accredited by the international AMBA, EQUIS, and AACSB. The school has many notable alumni in business and politics, such as Patrick Thomas (CEO Hermès), a former Prime Minister of France, Jean-Pierre Raffarin and the EU Commissioner for Internal Market and Services Michel Barnier. ESCP Europe has a total of 45000 alumni all over the world.

History

The school was established in Paris on 1 December in 1819 as the world's first business school.[4][5][6] It was modeled on the first Grande École, the École Polytechnique founded by Lazare Carnot and Gaspard Mong, but was initially much more modest, mainly because it had not been supported by the state. It gradually gained in stature and importance during the 19th century and moved to its current Parisian location on Avenue de la République in 1859. The School's inventors were a group of economic scholars and businessmen including the well-known economist Jean-Baptiste Say and the celebrated trader Vital Roux. Jean-Baptiste Say was an advocate of economic liberalism and is often credited with having coined the concept of entrepreneurship as early as 1800. Vital Roux is particularly known for having largely contributed to the elaboration of the Commercial Code in 1807 as well as for his up-front thinking in innovative pedagogy.

The international scope and global perspective of ESCP Europe has been visible since its early age. Already the class of 1824 counted 30% of international students with 15 different nationalities, amongst them seven Spanish, five Brazilians, five Dutch, four Germans, and two Americans. Language education was an essential part of its first curriculum which included, in addition to French grammar, also courses in English, German, and Spanish. As of 1825, a total of ten languages were taught at ESCP Europe and students had to study at least three of them.

Around one and a half centuries later, ESCP Europe pioneered through the creation of a multi-campus business school. In order to respond to the School’s European calling, campuses in Germany and in the United Kingdom were opened in 1973, followed by Spain in 1988 and Italy in 2004.

In 2011, ESCP Europe became a founding partner of HESAM, a cluster of well-known institutions for research and higher education in the humanities and social sciences such as the Ecole Nationale d’Administration (ENA), the National Conservatory of Arts and Crafts (CNAM), or the Pantheon-Sorbonne University. It is planned that together with the Ecole Nationale d'Administration, ESCP Europe constitutes a Collegium of Government and Management.[7]

Master in European Business

Based on an MBA-style curriculum with a cross-cultural approach, the MEB is a one-year full-time postgraduate programme (90 ECTS; possibility to do a longer 120 ECTS version) in general management with emphasis on a pragmatic approach to management. The programme is designed for graduates who have an undergraduate honours degree in any non-business discipline (i.e. law, engineering, sciences, humanities, medicine). Post-graduate professional experience of around two to three years is recommended. All students are selected by means of their academic and professional credentials and the successful completion of an assessment center including various interviews and a verbal-logic test (GMAT or SHL Test). There is a strong international side to the course and in 2008/09, there were 39 different nationalities across the five campuses.

The MEB is taught over two semesters, with students based in a different country for each semester (chosen from Paris, London, Madrid, Berlin and Turin).
