The EMD GT38ACe or Indonesian Railways Class CC205 is a diesel-electric locomotive made by Electro-Motive Diesel for export in Indonesia. There are 50 locomotives owned by PT Kereta Api, all of them are for coal duties in Sumatera and replace the aging EMD G26. It's also one of two most advanced locomotive in Indonesia (the other being GE CM20EMP).

History

PT Kereta Api operates the EMD G26 since 1986 and slowly tears down during operation due to its old age. In 2011, PT Kereta Api orders 5 brand new locomotives which they think capable enough to replace the G26.

Numbering

The locomotives are numbered from CC205 01 until CC205 50. But the current numbering system from Ministry of Transportation are CC205 11 01 until CC205 13 44.

Performance

The CC205 can haul up to 60 carriages of coal at a time, sometimes coupled together for easier haul. Unlike the other locomotives in Indonesia, CC205 has met EPA Tier 2 emission regulation and more efficient up to 25% thanks to the latest EMD 710 engine and several tweaks on the exhaust. The maximum speed of this locomotive is 50 mph (80 km/h), but it operates normally at 19-37 mph (30–60 km/h) due to the total gross of the entire set of carriages.

Builders

All of the first batch locomotives were built at EMD Plant in London, Ontario. Later batches came from EMD Plant at Muncie, Indiana.

Features

All of the locomotives have a distinctive PT Kereta Api's old red-blue livery, similar to the CC202. Inside the cab, old school side controller has been replaced with more modern cockpit with EM2000 computer system and digital display.

Other Operator

In February 2015, Congo-Ocean Railway taking delivery of 10 GT38ACe locomotives that have similar specification as PT KAI locos [1]
