Driving licence in Italy

In Italy the driving licence is a governmental right given to those who request a licence for any of the categories they desire. It is required for every type of motorized vehicle. The minimum age to obtain a driving licence is: 16 years for a motorcycle, 18 years for a car, and 21 years for buses and cargo vehicles .

The so called "patentino" (small driving license) is an Italian license given to youngsters with the minimum age of 14 years.This license permits Italian teenagers to drive in the republic of Italy scooters and the so-called "macchinetta" (macchinetta="small car", these are small cars made out of plastic, with 2 seats and a luggage rack on the back (a kind of smart) -mostly produced in china and similar countries- -> illegal in many other European countries) with 50cc.At the minimum age of 16 years, Italians can take the license for the 125cc which is given in all the other countries of the union and recognized at European level.

Obtaining a driver's licence

The Italian driving licence can be obtained after finishing a driving school and passing a two-stage test, the theory test and road test. Primary school diploma is also required to obtain valid driver's licence.
