Driving licence in Belgium

Driving licence in Belgium

In Belgium the driving licence is a governmental right given to those who request a licence for any of the categories they desire. It is required for every type of motorized vehicle. The minimum age to obtain a driving licence is: 16 years for a motorcycle, 18 years for a car, and 21 years for buses and cargo vehicles .

Obtaining a driver's licence

The Belgian driving licence can be obtained after finishing a driving school and passing a two-stage test, the theory test and road test. Beside Dutch, French and German, you can also apply for the driving license in English.[1] One very obscure fact about obtaining the Belgian driver's licence is that if an applicant does not succeed on the second attempt, they can not get a temporary driving license again for a period of three years.[2] The Belgian government punishes people for failing, since they believe this will increase the pass rates of the driving licence. On the other hand, people complain about this rule since they forgot how they should drive during this three year period and do not understand why they cannot get another temporary licence to further practice with their instructor. This rule was recently introduced on December 4, 2013, and is not widely followed by citizens because it is viewed as impractical and paternalistic in nature.
