"Dream Away" is a song appearing on George Harrison's 1982 album Gone Troppo, and released as a single in Japan. The song was featured in the ending credits of George Harrison's 1981 HandMade Films's Time Bandits, Terry Gilliam's first successful solo movie apart from Monty Python.[1] Apart from the film's orchestral score, this was the only song to be featured in the film, and was written specifically for it.

Background and release

At the time of this song's recording, Harrison found the current musical climate alienating. His commercial appeal had declined, with 1981's Somewhere in England failing to reach gold (despite featuring the John Lennon tribute smash hit, "All Those Years Ago"). With one album left on his recording contract, Harrison decided to get it over with and recorded Gone Troppo (an Australian slang expression meaning "gone mad/crazy").

"Dream Away" was to originally appear on the announced Time Bandits soundtrack album. However, when that failed to materialize and Harrison was finalizing the tracks for his Gone Troppo album, he decided to put "Dream Away" in the mix. Although the Gone Troppo album was a commercial flop, "Dream Away" became a popular tune.

Subsequent history

In 2010, AOL Radio listeners chose "Dream Away" as one of the "10 Best George Harrison Songs", appearing at number 8 on the list.[2]
