Dramalj is a village in Croatia. Dramalj is a well-known tourist resort close to Crikvenica, extending from Crni mol (a quarter in the city of Crikvenica) to the tourist complex Kačjak. There are 1485 inhabitants, most of which are engaged in tourism and catering industry. A more intensive development of the village started back in the 19th century, following the development of tourism in the nearby Crikvenica area. It is due to the most favorable climatic and geographical conditions as well as the vicinity of Rijeka and Opatija that tourists, mountaineers and hunters started visiting Croatian Littoral, particularly Crikvenica and Novi Vinodolski on a larger scale in the second half of the past century.

Nowadays, Dramalj has been a prominently tourist resort with numerous private villas, newly built houses and suites, vacation resorts and fairly quality range of hotel offer (hotel Rivijera). Tourist complex Kačjak, named after the peninsula where it is located, offers bungalows and pavilions with total capacity of 500 guests as well as sport and recreational center equipped with all sport playgrounds, disco club, and a restaurant with a beautiful view to island Krk.

In Dramalj, there are several quality restaurants offering local specialties, as well as post office and a clinic providing medical assistance for tourists. Culture Hall is also located there and it is particularly important during winter when traditional carnival feasts are held.

History

St. Helen's Church

The village emerged only recently. It was actually a fishermen port, with great many olive-groves and real properties located in the surroundings and owned by the inhabitants of Tribalj valley. Dramalj was first mentioned in the 18th century, when it was named Zagorje - Dramalj.

Above Dramalj there are ancient ruins of the Liburnian hill fort enclosed with dry-stone dyke. Amphorae found around the Kačjak peninsula witness of ancient Roman port located there at the time. There is also a "toš", an ancient olive press.

County of Sveta Jelena (St. Helen) was founded in 1809. Parish house and Sveta Jelena Church were built after 1812. The church was built on foundations of an old chapel. G. Capovilla, the famous stone carver from Rijeka, made the altar in 1796. Mate Balas, who was the parish priest at the time and supported with moneys contribution of his parishioners, initiated construction of the church. The interior of the church was refurbished in the 19th century, pulpit in 1837 and main altar in 1845. It did not take long that the name of the village was changed to Sveta Jelena (St. Helen) after the homonymous church. After the World War II, the old name Dramalj was restored.

In the vicinity of the church there is the Culture Hall, which hosted the first public library in 1939.

Climate

The North Adriatic, especially in this part of Quarner Riviera enjoys the mildness of the Mediterranean climate, however with some continental influence. Average annual air temperature is 14,20 C. The coldest period is in January, while the hottest is in July.

Average overcast equals 5,1 tenths of obscured sky, varying from 3,3 to 6,2 tenths, so that the insolation (according to Frejka) is approximately 2500 hours a year, which is considerably higher than in some famous Swiss health resorts. Average annual relative humidity is 70%, while peak rainy period is in October and November. Air pressure averages to 761,8 mmHg.

Bora and sirocco are predominant winds, while other winds ("ostro", mistral, Levanter) blow considerably rarely. Bora blows in period from November to February, having its maxima in January, while sirocco is most frequently experienced from May to August with average maximum in July. Ostro (south wind) reaches its maximum in November. A particular climatic feature is so called "calma", i.e., absolutely calm weather without any wind.

As to the climate, the area is features with sunny, dry and hot summers and cloudy, rainy and relatively mild winters with characteristic wind system.

The soil is karts (limestone) and it is porous. The see is shallow even at considerably distance form the coast. Wave strength in minor, allergens in air scant, while the salt and ozone content in the air is increased with minimal aerobic pollution.

The area features all climatic and bioclimatic conditions favorable for the development of thalassotherapy and health tourism.
