Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute with its main campus in the city of Chennai in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It was previously known as Dr. M.G.R Engineering College
It was founded by A.C.Shanmugam under the Kannamal Educational Trust. Dr. M.G.R. Engineering College and Thai Moogambigai Dental College were established in 1987 and 1991 respectively. These two colleges were made into constituent colleges of Dr.M.G.R Educational and Research Institute University, by the Ministry of Human Resource Development and the University Grants Commission.
Infrastructure
The university is equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure, giving students the best in terms of technology. The campus is spread over 300 acres of land, with a built-up area of over 1.1 million square feet. The classrooms are well-lit and ventilated and the 64 laboratories are well-equipped and furnished with all necessary conveniences to enable a better learning atmosphere.
The library is well-stocked with an impressive catalogue of books and journals. To make information available to students as effectively as possible, the university boasts of a central library, department libraries as well as a digital library. It is a 24-hour Wi-Fi enabled campus and the electronic and computer laboratories have the latest computers and best technological facilities.
The institute, after becoming a university, built the VOC Block, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Block, Mother Teresa Block, New Block, Ganesh Block and a hostel near Kuvam river between Dr. M.G.R. Engineering College and Thaimoogambigai Dental College. A second campus was created at Aarani.[1]
Regrowth
Leadership of the institution was given to A.C.S. Arun Kumar, pro chancellor, the son of A.C. Shanmugam, who assembled a teaching faculty. Admission are done through management quota and entrance exam conducted by the institute. He made scholarships for the scheduled caste and backward caste community as per government norms. Scholarship is given to students who are residents of Tamil Nadu. After all these difficulties, the A.C.S Medical College and Rajarajeshwari Engineering College were brought under Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute university. The university rebuilt New Block, First Year Blocks and Anna Block, the number of students joining the university increased .
