Dover Castle Clock

Dover Castle Clock is a seventeenth-century clock formerly in Dover Castle and now in the Science Museum, London.

History and description

The origin of the clock is uncertain, but it is thought to date from c. 1600. It was discovered in Dover Castle in 1851 and removed from there in 1872. It was restored and exhibited working in the Scientific Exhibition of 1876.

It was originally dated as having been made around 1348,[1] but was later revised to c. 1600. It is one of the few surviving public clocks that still uses its original Foliot balance for its time control,[2] and was constructed at a time when this control mechanism was very old fashioned.

It is now exhibited in the Science Museum, London.
