Douglas Levin

Douglas A. Levin (Doug Levin) is an American businessman best known as the founder and former chief executive officer of Black Duck Software for the company's first eight years.[1] Currently, Levin is the co-founder and CEO of Quant5, Inc., a predictive analytics company based in Cambridge, Massachusetts.[2] Levin also serves on the Board of Directors for the MassVentures, and actively works as an early stage advisor to Boston-area startup companies, including Hubspot and Visible Measures

Levin holds four software patents in the areas of software algorithm examination and license dependencies.

Career

Early Years

Levin began his career as a product evangelist on the Microsoft Excel for Windows version 1.0 team for Microsoft Corporation, where he worked from August 1987 to May 1995. He then served as CEO of MessageMachines (acquired by NMS Communications in 2002) and X-Collaboration Software Corporation (acquired by Progress Software in 2000), two VC-backed companies based in Boston.

Lucid Imagination

Alongside Marc Krellenstein, Levin helped found and fund Lucid Imagination from 2007-2009. Subsequently, he served on the company’s first boards of directors and advisors when it was located in Needham, MA. Today, the company is based in Redwood City, CA.

Black Duck Software

Levin founded Black Duck Software in 2002 and served as its CEO from December, 2002 to September, 2008. He also served on Black Duck’s Board of Directors from its inception.

Quant5, Inc.

In September 2011 Levin founded Quant5, Inc., a predictive marketing company offering cutting edge analytics via SaaS (Software-as-a-Service) for medium-sized businesses and enterprises.

In July, Boston.com wrote an article about Quant5 becoming the Nostradamus of big data. The article describes an in-depth look of the start-up’s predictive analytics – trying to take the data that companies collect and help them use it to find new revenues.

Education and Awards

Levin has an advanced degree in International Economics from the Collège d'Europe in Bruges, Belgium and a BA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has also attended Columbia University, New York University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In 2007, Levin was awarded CEO of the Year by the Mass Technology Leadership Council.[3] He holds three software patents in the areas of software algorithm examination and license dependencies. In 2009, he was a fellow at New England Clean Energy Foundation.[4]
