Douglas Campbell (Scottish politician)

Douglas Campbell is a Scottish National Party politician and a councillor on South Ayrshire Council for the Ayr North ward.

From Ayr Douglas was first elected as a Scottish Labour Party councillor in 1987 to the old Kyle and Carrick District Council. He worked as a Labour party official and was election agent for George Foulkes when he was a Member of Parliament. In late 2005 he became Leader of the Labour Party group after former Cllr Andy Hill resigned his seat on the council. On May 27, 2008, however, Campbell resigned as Labour Group Leader and was forced out of the party after his signature was forged by a fellow Labour councillor.

He sat for the next couple of years as an Independent until May 19, 2011 when he joined the Scottish National Party. He was selected as a candidate for the Scottish local elections, 2012 in his Ayr North ward along with sitting Cllr Tom Slider. Campbell polled 1,361 first preferences and took the second seat out of four exceeding the quota. However, his running mate lost his seat.

After the elections he was elected Leader of an enlarged SNP group and Leader of the Opposition in place of Troon based Cllr Nan McFarlane.
