Douglas "Dougie" Vipond (born 15 October 1966) is a Scottish broadcaster for BBC Scotland and drummer for pop band Deacon Blue.
Television career
On television and radio Vipond has fronted sport, travel and rural affairs programmes. Dougie has hosted BBC Scotland’s sport output for the past fifteen years, presenting a vast range of sporting events including Scottish Cup Finals, International Rugby and the Melrose 7s. Other sports he’s covered over the years include World Championship Mountain Biking, Three Day Eventing and The Bowls World Championship. He can also be seen covering Scotland’s nightly sports news on Reporting Scotland.
He was one of the BBC’s presenters for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.[1]
His love of the outdoors has led to him presenting BBC Scotland’s The Adventure Show and the award-winning rural affairs series, Landward.
In 2010, Vipond appeared in the documentary Up A Long Creek, in which he and the comedian Fred MacAulay kayaked the length of the Caledonian Canal for Sport Relief.
In the same year he fronted the world’s first high definition broadcast of live climbing. The Great Climb, was seen simultaneously across the UK on BBC 2 and the BBC HD Channel and streamed worldwide on the web. This programme won a Scottish BAFTA in the Live Event category.
Two years later he really pushed the boat out for Sport Relief captaining a Scottish Team of former Olympians and Rugby internationals, running, cycling, sailing and rowing round the UK.
Deacon Blue
Along with his successful career in broadcasting, Vipond was also one of the founding members of pop band Deacon Blue along with Ricky Ross and Lorraine McIntosh. The band are perhaps best known for their 1988 hit "Real Gone Kid" which peaked at No.8 in the UK Singles Chart.[2] It is now over 25 years since the band released their debut album, Raintown. They have gone on to have six million album sales, 12 UK Top 40 singles and two No.1 albums to their credit.
