Pilot Doug Matthews

Doug Matthews is from Palm Beach Florida. He is an accomplished pilot, world record holder and former Naval officer who participates in a number of classes at the Reno Air Races.[1] Matthews has set 100 U.S. and World aviation records in his flying career.[2]

Matthews received a Presidential appointment to both the Air Force Academy and the Naval Academy. He chose to attend the Navy to enable him to fly from aircraft carriers. During his schooling at Annapolis, he majored in Aerospace Engineering. He graduated during the Vietnam conflict, and took delayed orders to flight training to serve as a gun-boat skipper inside the South Vietnamese jungles.

Matthews is also a former test pilot for the Citation jet factory. He competes in aerobatic competition in his Pitts Special, and flies air shows in his own North American F-86 Sabre and F-5 Freedom Fighter & the P-51 Mustang "The Rebel". His business interests also includes aircraft buying and financing.

Matthews races his P 51 Mustang "The Rebel" in the Unlimited Division at the Reno Air Races.[3]

Matthews is regarded as a top tier Polo player.[4] September 1994 Doug Matthews’s team played for the 1994 United States Open polo championship, in BETHPAGE, L.I..

World Records

On May 22, 2013, Matthews set several aeronautical records at the controls of his P-51D Mustang “The Rebel”. Departing from a grass runway at Florida's Indiantown Airport, Matthews flew “The Rebel” over Lake Okeechobee. Setting world records for "time to reach altitudes of 9,000 m (30,000 feet, 18 minutes)" and 12,000 m (40,000 feet, 31 minutes), and a new altitude record: 40,100 feet in level flight and 42,500 feet maximum altitude.[5][6] The previous record of 36,902 feet had been set in 1954.

Matthews also serves as the vice president of "FAST" where he teaches safe formation flying in restored, vintage military aircraft and civilian aircraft.[9][10]
