Doraemon (ドラえもん Doraemon) was the first anime series based on Fujiko Fujio's manga of the same name. It was produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha (but animated by Nihon Hoso Eigasha) and was a brief and unsuccessful attempt at adaptating the original manga series into anime. It was launched on April 1, 1973 on the Nippon TV network and only lasted 6 months. The show was cancelled because it had very low ratings and the series was never really popular with either general viewers or fans of the original manga. After it was cancelled, Doraemon remained exclusively a manga until 1979 when Shin-Ei Animation produced and broadcast a much more successful anime adaptation, which officially ended in 2005.
The character designs in this anime adaptation appear more stylized than the character designs used in the TV Asahi anime adaption, which were more true to the original manga. It also used a different theme tune rather than the 1979 anime and the 2005 anime, which was possibly influenced partly by the theme tune and based on the Pink Panther cartoons.
Rarity
The series was poorly preserved and never released on home video, but ran on reruns until 1980. Nearly all the footage within the series (except for the opening and closing credits) was destroyed in a "cremation-like" studio fire sometime after the series was cancelled, and the series is now considered lost. Surviving reels from the show are occasionally shown at Doraemon fan conventions in Japan.[1] In addition, the audio of several episodes still survives.[2] Still images from episodes 1 and 24 exist.[3]

Opening sequence
The opening theme used for the entire Doraemon series airing was "Doraemon" (ドラえもん Doraemon), which was performed by Harumi Naito (内藤はるみ) ft. NLT Group (劇団NLT), and is one of the few surviving pieces of footage of this series that wasn't destroyed by the fire that destroyed nearly all footage of this show, being uploaded onto YouTube in February 2006.
The opening sequence features Doraemon travelling back in time and coming out through Nobita's desk at the drawer, then to go around Nobita's town with many stunned citizens and animals staring at him as he goes by. The next scene shows with Doraemon placing Gian, who was chasing Nobita around with a baseball bat angrily; on top of a really tall pillar with a gadget he pulled out of his four-dimensional pocket when he then gets completely distracted after running off, panicking from seeing a mouse (which was on a string that was held up by Suneo as a special trick), which he then walks up a tall building and clings onto a clock, making the hand on the clock sway around as he holds on, with Doraemon still panicking unconsciously as the opening sequence ends.
Differences between manga and subsequent anime series
The 1973 series had some drastic changes from the original manga. Most notably:
- Gian lives with his widowed father, who is weaker and shorter than him and is often bullied by him. His mother is deceased. In the manga and subsequent anime series, his mother is a recurring character.
- Doraemon doesn't come back to Nobita, and the series ends as such. In the next anime series, Doraemon comes back after leaving Nobita in a special episode. There was apparently going to be a second season in which Doraemon returns from the future, but due to its cancellation, it never happened.
- The Take-copter is named "Heritonbo" (name used in early works).
- Doraemon comes from the 21st century, instead of the 22nd century.
- Sensei has a given name, Ganari (我成)
- There was an additional character named Gachako, an annoying female robot duck. She was removed from later versions of the manga and never appeared in the subsequent anime series due to the fact that Fujiko Fujio heavily disliked her annoying personality, she hasn't made any other appearances since then.
- Jaiko and Dorami were absent.
