Donald Smith (Lancashire cricketer)

Donald John Smith (1 May 1929 – 3 December 2004) played first-class cricket for Lancashire in 1951 and 1952.^[1] He was born in Accrington, Lancashire and he died at Birch Vale, Stockport, Greater Manchester.

Smith was a right-arm lower-order batsman and left-arm fast-medium bowler in the first-class matches that he played. Two of his first-class matches were against touring sides: the 1951 South Africans and the 1952 Indians.^[2] He did not take more than a single wicket in any innings in his first-class games. He played regular Minor Counties cricket between 1949 and 1953 for Cheshire and Lancashire Second Eleven.^[3]

Family background

Smith's father was named Stansfield Smith and he played Lancashire League cricket regularly for Accrington Cricket Club in the 1920s and once in Minor Counties cricket for Cheshire in 1949.^[4] Donald Smith's younger brother, Colin Stansfield Smith, played in 106 first-class cricket matches, mainly for Lancashire and for Cambridge University, and later became a well-known architect.^[5]
