Don Bosco Cristo Rey High School is a private, Roman Catholic high school in Takoma Park, Maryland. It is located in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington. The school finished renovation in 2007 and finished adding a new science wing in 2014. It is currently educating its fifth class of students for 2014. The school is one of the many schools in the Cristo Rey Network which are found nationwide, and the Salesians of Don Bosco. The current president is Fr. Steve Shafran. The current principal is Larry Savoy. Catina Negrete is the Executive Director of the Corporate Work Study Program. The students work one day a week (Tues-Fri) plus one Monday per month. The jobs that the students are employed help pay for the bulk of the tuition.
Background
Don Bosco Cristo Rey HS opened in August, 2007 and had graduated its first class in 2011. It is part of the Cristo Rey Network of high schools, the original being Cristo Rey Jesuit High School in Chicago. As well the school is run by the Salesians of Don Bosco and is the only Salesian High School part of the Cristo Rey Network. In 2014, the school completed construction of a new wing that will primarily serve science classes.
Book about the Cristo Rey Model
In January 2008, Loyola Press will release a book titled More than A Dream: How One School's Vision is Changing the World (More than a Dream official site). The book, authored by G.R. Kearney, a writer and former volunteer teacher at Cristo Rey Jesuit High School in Chicago, documents the unlikely development of the Cristo Rey model and its success throughout the United States.
