Dolphin Senior Public School, (commonly called Dolphin) is a middle school located in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. In the 2008-2009 school year, it contained 517 students between the grades of 6 to 8. The school's mascot is a dolphin, and its colours are blue and yellow. The school now has 514 students.

Key Facts

Dolphin offers many overnight excursions. Locations include Mansfield, Quebec, Ottawa and Camp Couchiching. Also, a small number of 7th and 8th graders went to France during March Break in the 2007-2008 school year.

Dolphin is also home to many winning school teams. These include the basketball, volleyball and flag football teams, as well as a professional chess club.

The school also runs the ELC (or Enhanced Learning Class), in which gifted students are placed. Recently, the grade 6 ELC was moved to Dolphin.

Administration

The principal is Mrs. O'Brien, who is currently on medical leave and was replaced by Mr. Frank Trachsler. Mr. Trachsler left on December 9. Mrs. Khan has replaced Mr. Trachsler as acting principal. The former principal was Mrs. Spence,who used to be principal of Plowman's Park Public School, who replaced Mr.Armstrong in January 2009,who left on retirement.Mr.Armstrong replaced Dr. Bent on November 10, 2008.The vice principal is currently Mrs Freemantle and as of the 23rd or march, 2015 Mrs. Khan was replaced by Mr. Wilson.

School Rules

Dolphin keeps the rules needed in any structured school, however, they have made a new rule. Due to the recent selling of Yu-Gi-Oh! trading cards, it has since been banned from the school

Fundraising

Dolphin participates in many fundraisers that include: Can Drive, Cambells Soup Label Fundraiser, Kernels Popcorn Fundraiser, Bake Sales, Me to We fundraisers, Pie tosses, Head Shaving, Tie Clipping, Stuffco Lunch Program, school dances, and even participates in Animal Rights Groups.

Competitions

Dolphin students participate in a variety of competitions. The Gifted Classes(ELC) are strongly encouraged to participate in these competitions. Competitions by subjects include:

Mathematics:

Caribou Math Competition-Dolphin students may participate in this competition once every month, dis-including the breaks. Many of Dolphin students were able to make it on the Top 30 list in the world! This competition is mandatory for the students in the Enhanced Learning Classes.

Math League-This competition only occurs once every year, usually around February. Students who achieve a high score may be eligible to participate in a math camp.

CHAMP Math Olympiad-Dolphin selects 2 achieved students from each grade to participate in this math competition.

Gauss Math Competition-Everyone is welcomed to participate in this competition. In the year of 2013-2014, 5 grade 7 students and 1 grade 8 student achieved a perfect score!

Pascal Math Competition-Students may be able to participate in this math contest designed for 9th graders, but it isnt available for Dolphin Students to participate in every year.


Science:


All Science Challenge- Dolphin students audition for the 16-20(may vary each year) spots for the All Science Challenge teams. In the year of 2013-2014, Dolphin sent 4 teams to the competition, and took home 1st Place, 3rd Place, and The Spirit Award. That 3 out of the total 4 awards!


Public Speaking:


Excellence in Eloquence- This is a competition is only available for grade 7/8 and is strongly encouraged for the Enhanced Learning Classes.

La Concours des Arts Oratoire- This is a french public speaking competition. In the year of 2013-2014, a grade 7 girl qualified for provincials. She also qualified for provincials the following year!
