Dodge 440
The Dodge 440 was a full-size car offered by Dodge from 1962 to 1964.[1]
Dodge Dart 440 (1962)
When released in 1962, it was the upmarket version of the Dodge Dart and was designated as the Dodge Dart 440.[2] It was fitted with all the standard equipment of the Dart and Dart 330, plus backup lights and exterior moldings.[2] The Dart 440 was available as a 4-door sedan, 2-door hardtop, 4-door hardtop, 2-door convertible and 4-door station wagon.[2] Power was delivered by a standard 225 Slant-Six with 145 horsepower.[3] The 318 2-barrel, 361 2-barrel, 383 2-barrel, 383 4 -barrel and 426 4-barrel/426 2x4-barrel were all optional. The car rode on a 116-inch wheelbase shared with the Dart, Dart 330 and Polara 500.[2] Power seats were $96.[4] Fuel economy in 1962 at 40 mph was 24.10mpg for the Slant 6 engine.[5]

From 1963 the 440 was separated from the new, smaller Dart range.[2] It now featured a 119-inch wheelbase shared with the 330 and Polara and available as a 2-door sedan, 4-door sedan, 2-door hardtop and 4-door station wagon.[2]

The Australian built Dodge TD2 Phoenix was based on the 1963 Dodge 440
The 440, along with the 330, was replaced in 1965 by the Polara, with the 880 taking the Polara's place in the lineup on the new C Body with 121-inch (3,073 mm) wheelbase. The 426 motor was eliminated from full-size Dodges in 1965 as well. However, the name 440 stayed on as a trim level of the Dodge Coronet.[6]
During the three production years, the Dodge 440 was a mid-range model, equivalent to the Chevrolet Bel Air of the same years. It featured less chrome and a plainer interior than the de luxe Polara. Its lighter weight and available big-block 426 engine gave it a formidable reputation in racing.
