Docscience

Docscience is a term used for assessing and describing the overall quality of wellness programs. A true docscience wellness program is set up by a team of medical doctors, athletes, fitness experts and scientists, not just a single person. It is a requirement to have all four types of experts represented on the working team. The term focuses on confirming and showing that the wellness program uses an integrated group of experts, working together synergistically to deliver a wellness program that is tailored to the individual. Many docscience programs will also include a counselor or support group. The intention is to differentiate between effective and non-effective programs by confirming that the program was produced by a team of qualified experts.

History

The term was initially coined by American Weight Loss Fitness Trainer Bruce Wayne, CWP, EMT, MPT, MM,[1] to analyze and measure the overall completeness of different wellness programs created at gyms, weight loss clinics, physician’s offices, and holistic wellness centers. The word was informally used by some in the medical and scientific community who also agreed that a new word needed to be created to provide a needed distinction compared to the word “wellness” which some believe has become meaningless as a terminology to validate an effective wellness programs. The word docscience was first published in a book, Weight Loss Biology written by a number of doctors and scientist; Dr. Trumbull, MD – OB/GYN & Endocrinology, Dr. Vinueza, MD, PhD – Neuroscience, Dr. Ashraf, PhD – Health Chemistry & Molecular Biology, and Dr. Leyvtskyy, PhD – Immunology & Biology. The word docscience was officially first used by a weight loss fitness and wellness program called Armageddon Weight Loss, establishing their program as the first docscience wellness program. In the article it was stated that Docscience is a tool to quickly assess a wellness program’s quality with a docscience program addressing multiple components needed for sustained wellness and weight loss. The most common situation, according to the article, is misleading marketing practices and commercials aired by single-sided programs claiming complete effectiveness. An example would be that taking a yoga class will teach you to eat better as well as increase a person’s amount of exercise per week. The new terminology that differentiates obsolete one-sided weight loss programs from effective multi-faceted programs would be Docscience. According to Bruce Wayne, any DocScience program must include two experts in each of four fields: medicine, science, nutrition/diet, and athletic to meet minimum criteria. The term is not exclusive to its originators and is used by companies that produce wellness programs to illustrate the overall comprehensiveness of their programs.
