Challenges

Week 1: Barretstown

In the first week 50 applicants are reduced to 16 candidates. Dublin Civil Defence created a camp similar to what the volunteers may have to live in during their year of volunteering. Commandant John Moriarty explains that the camp is in near perfect conditions something unlikely to meet them in countries they may visit. Malcolm Quigley (VSO), Anne Maguire (Haven), John Moffett, Karen Kennedy (Habitat for Humanity Ireland), Maurice McQuillan (Trocaire) and Adi Roche (Chernobyl Children's Project) act as mentors.

The first task by the volunteers is to fend for themselves basic shelter is provided but food and warmth they need to provide themselves. The main task first the first weekend is to help with Barretstown. They were asked to clear out the lake, do up a boat provided to Barretstown by the makers of the film Ondine and to sort out a maze for the children staying in Barretstown.

12 of the finalist were picked by the mentors; Noel Corrigan, Ignatius T. Lynott, Bronagh Donohoe, Fiona Byrne, Michael McCarthy, Aisling Moran, Mike Cole, Rebecca Fennelly, Paula Daly, Brendan Morrissey, Johnny Finegan Jnr. and Kay Kinsella.

A vote by the all 50 volunteers selected the next 4 volunteers; Matt O'Grady, Louise Duffy, Daniel Cunningham and Carol Leonard. Kay Kinsella a retiree from Co. Waterford was advised not to continue on medical grounds, the public vote was then used to select her replacement who was Maree Duffy.

Week 2: Zambia

Mentor Anne Maguire stays on as mentor to the remaining 16 volunteers, who are sent to work with the charity Habitat for Humanity Ireland in Zambia to build a house for a family. There they are met by Karen Kennedy as their mentor for the weekends task.

When they return to Ireland the women vote on the men and the men vote on the women. Maree and Matt are voted out of the series by the two groups.

Week 3: Hostile Environment

Anne Maguire felt that the contests in week 2 may have been choosing a friend to volunteer with rather than a volunteer with the required abilities. She was worried about Ignatius saying "I was surprised at how positive the girls were when it came to Ignatius. I felt that he was not sensitive when he was in Zambia at all, my concerns over Ignatius were would he respond well to authority when he went overseas and this would be a big issue."

In week 3 the volunteers are put under pressure in a hostile environment. They are sent on a Hostile Environment Training course with the Irish Army in the Curragh. Mine Detection, interrogation techniques, water purification, road blocks, hijackings and kidnappings. Mike Cole is the team leader of an Irish charity called Do the Right Thing.

Again the women were asked to vote on the men and the men on the women. Noel and Paula are voted out.

Week 4: Greece

An environment task is to help with the conservation of the Loggerhead Turtle in Greece. Working with the Archelon Turtle Project the volunteers work with the project to bring young turtles to the sea. The project requires the volunteers to take them from the nest but to then follow the turtle to the sea to insure that the turtle can return in the future.

Danny and Rebecca are voted out.

Week 5: Belarus

The volunteers are sent to volunteer in a children's orphanage in Belarus. Airs 5 October 2010.
