Dmitry Pirog (born June 27, 1980 in Temryuk, Russia) is a retired Russian boxer in the Middleweight division. Although his career was cut short due to a debilitating back injury, he is one of the few professional boxers to win a world championship and retire undefeated.
Amateur career
Dmitry used to be a chess player and wasn’t getting enough activity, so he decided to start boxing. He had over 230 amateur fights, winning several Russian National Amateur Championships.[1]
Professional career
The undefeated Pirog was relatively unknown going into the bout with Jacobs, with his biggest win prior to the bout being over former contender Kofi Jantuah.
WBO Middleweight title
On July 31, 2010 Pirog fought Middleweight contender, Daniel Jacobs for the vacant WBO Middleweight Championship.[2][3] Pirog upset Jacobs via knockout with a hard right hand in the 5th round to win the title, on the Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Juan Diaz II undercard.[4]
On September 2012, Pirog was stripped of his Middleweight title by the World Boxing Organization after choosing to fight IBO and WBA Middleweight Champion Gennady Golovkin instead of WBO Interim Champion Hassan N'Dam N'Jikam. Pirog suffered a back injury during training for his match against Gennady Golovkin,[5] and the WBO decided to give his title to N'Jikam.[6]
