Districts of Georgia (country)

The Districts of Georgia refer to the second-level administrative regions of Georgia in Caucasus. The first level divisions of Georgia (9 regions, 2 autonomous republics and City of Tbilisi) are divided into 67 municipalities (before 2006 - raions, Georgian: რაიონი) and 5 cities with local governments. Under the Soviet Union they were known as raions.

Georgian SSR contained the Abkhaz Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (Abkhazia), the Adjar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (Ajaria), and the South Ossetian Autonomous Oblast.

Abkhazia and Ajaria retained their status in independent Georgia. South Ossetia's autonomous status was revoked in 1990. However, today, due to separatist movements and internal conflict, South Ossetia and Abkhazia claim independence. However these are recognized by very few nations as independent nations.
