Dendrobium utile

Diplocaulobium utile (or in Indonesian local name anggrek serat; fiber orchid) is the official flower of Sulawesi Tenggara. This flower got its name because the plant has many fibers and can be used to make handcrafts. This is a rare orchid.

In local language, this orchid also called Anomi, Anemi or Alemi. The basionym of the species is Dendrobium utile, but it was later changed transferred to Diplocaulobium as Diplocaulobium utile.

Description

Diplocaulobium utile is an epiphyte. It is distinguished from similar orchids by the root shaped like a bird nest with green-yellowish colors. The flowers grow in the leaf axils. The petals are yellow, with a narrow shape. The plants make attractive decorations, but are shortlived.

Diplocaulobium utile can be found in Sulawesi and Papua.

Many local often using the roots to make expensive handcrafts because of its soft texture, shiny and golden color.
