Diocese of Wessex

The Diocese of Wessex was an ancient Christian diocese in England during Anglo-Saxon times, from 634 to c. 704. The diocese covered most of Hampshire, Berkshire, and parts of Oxfordshire and Wiltshire. The cathedral was Old Minster, Winchester, and the first bishop was Saint Birinus Around 704, the diocese was split into the diocese of Winchester and the diocese of Sherborne.^[1]
