Dharanidhar College

Dharanidhar is a college in the district of Keonjhar in the Indian state of Odisha. The region around the college has extensive forests, mountains, streams and falls. It is rich with plenty of mineral resources, abundant flora and fauna, besides a sizeable tribal population with their varied dialects, language and culture. To be specific, the celebrated Gandhamardan mountain range, described in the epic, Ramayan as a unique source of the herbal medicines and Sitabinj, the Ajanta of Odisha and the mountain Gonasika, allowing the sacred river Baitarani to stream out, lie nearby.

The college was established, due to noble efforts of the local elite and the unflinching support of the district administration in 1957 as an intermediate science college. It was headed by the ten Collector R. Venkatraman, IAS granted affiliation by the Utkal University, the then only University of the state, the same year; with the name Keonjhar Science College.

Present Status

The whole main building of the college, spanning more than ten thousand square feet of plinth area and solid concrete structure with provision for almost all necessary facilities was donated by a benevolent elite, Muhammad Shrajuddin of Keonjhar. The college was taken over by the Government of Odisha in 1962, and on opening of the faculty of the humanities in 1967, it was renamed Keonjhar College. During 1983-84, the institution was changed into the present name, after the name of Bhuyan Dharanidhar, a renowned revolutionary whose voice against feudalism of his age, has been instance and inspiration for uprise in this region, during the later national movement for independence. In 1999 the college has been affiliated to the North Odisha University, located at Baripada, in the adjoining district of Mayurbhanj. Autonomous status has been conferred to the college on 24.09.2004 The College has been accredited B+ grade by the NAAC on 02.02.2006. Now the college has the student strength of 2300. This is the second largest college in Odisha in accordance to area of the college. Prem Pratik Behera, a student of Computer Science Department became the topper of Dharanidhar College in the session of 2012. Md Ataullah, a student of Computer Science Department became the topper in the session of 2011.

ACADEMICS

The college offers teaching at the under graduate level in subjects like Anthropology, English, Economics, History, Philosophy, Political science, Oriya and Sanskrit in humanities stream, in commerce and in Botany, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geology, Mathematics, Physics and Zoology in Science stream. Beside it offers P.G teaching in Political Science, Commerce, Chemistry and Geology.
