Deo clan

The Deo are a gotra (clan) of Jats, found in the Punjab region of India

History and origin

According to the traditions of the tribe, Sankatra was their ancestor, and they point to the town of Zafarwal, as the seat of their original settlement.[1]

Their ancestor is said to be a Mahaj, who came from an area they describe as "Saki Jungle", in North India. Of his five sons, Sohal, Kom, Deol, Aulakh and Deo, all of who gave their names to Jat tribes.[1] According to another tradition, they are descended from Jagdeo, a Suryavanshi Rajput.

The Deo are distinct from the Deol clan of Jats, although both claim descent from a common ancestor. The majority of the Deo Jatt Clan worshipped Sakhi Sarwar, a Mystical Saint.

One Branch of the Clan traces their lineage back to Kahn Singh, around the Mid 19th Century. Kahn Singh was a Jagirdar from Village Naddha, now in District Gujranwala, Pakistan. his Son, Ganda Singh was followed by Wadhawa Singh, who served in the British Army Medical Corps as a Medical Officer (Captain) during the Second World War. Captain Wadhawa Singh also had the Honorific Sardar Bahadur title, inherited from his Father. His Sons, Sarup Singh and Daljit Singh were forced to give up their landholdings and migrate to Indian Panjab after the Partition of India in 1947. This part of the Clan, together with other branches of one degree of separation, relocated to Mothanwaala, near Sultanpur Lodhi in District Kapurthala, Panjab. Mohinder Singh, Avtar Singh and their line still lives there. Sarup Singh and Daljit Singh, who had taken up Government Service, lived away from their allotted acreage. Daljit's Singh's Son and Grandson currently live in the USA. Daljit Singh's Grandson, Gurpratap Singh Deo, served in Afghanistan with the US and NATO Forces in 2010-2013. Sarup Singh's Grandson and Great Grandson live in Mohali Panjab. There are other Branches of the Clan, with prominent achievements to their Names, and it is requested of the readers to add more information so that this most ancient of the Jatt Clans, though small in numbers, can put forward it's proud past and hopes for a bright and everlasting future. Naddha and Sankhatra were two brothers. Naddha settled here and Sankhatra settled in Narowal Tehsil now a days District of Punjab Pakistan
