Delta Hotels and Resorts is a chain of 40 hotels and resorts across Canada, primarily in the 4 star range of standard.

It is the only hotel company to have been recognized for its sustained focus on business excellence by the prestigious Excellence Canada with three Canada Awards for Excellence. The hospitality company has also consistently ranked as one of the country’s 50 Best Employers for 14 years, and has been named to the Green 30 since 2010. As well, its national sustainability program, Delta Greens is the most comprehensive and ambitious in the hospitality industry touching on every aspect of the hotel business. Delta’s Corporate Social Responsibility platform, Delta Helps, includes a chain-wide commitment to the communities it serves through a national partnership with Habitat for Humanity Canada, participation in the Hotel Association of Canada’s Green Key Eco-Rating program, and work with various other charitable groups.

History

Delta was founded in 1962 in Richmond, British Columbia with a single 62-room motor inn called Delport Inn and expanded across British Columbia by 1970.[2] It has locations in all 10 provinces. It has a staff of 7,000 employees and is under the leadership of CEO Kenneth Greene. Its global reservation centre is located in Fredericton, New Brunswick.

Delta once had a hotel in the United States, the Delta Court of Flags Hotel,[3] located in Orlando, Florida, however, it was closed sometime after 1996 and has subsequently been demolished. On October 2, 2007, British Columbia Investment Management Corporation announced that it had acquired Delta Hotels.[4] The hotel chain was a 100% holding of Fairmont Hotels and Resorts from 1998 to 2007. Delta's corporate head office is at 77 King Street West (Toronto-Dominion Centre Royal Trust Tower).

Delta's specific branding includes the Delta Privilege rewards program and "Signature Club" executive floor rooms that feature extra amenities and included breakfast.

On January 27, 2015, BC Investment Management Corporation sold Delta to Marriott International, who will take over management and franchise rights pending regulatory approval on the sale.[5]

On March 31, 2015, Marriot completed the takeover of Delta Hotels. [6]

List of properties

Delta has 40 hotels and resort properties across the country (excluding Northwest Territories, Yukon Territory and Nunavut) including 8 in Ontario, 9 in British Columbia, 7 in Alberta, 5 in Quebec, 3 in New Brunswick, 2 in Nova Scotia, 2 in Saskatchewan and 1 each in Manitoba, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador. New Delta hotels in Waterloo,[7] Thunder Bay,[8] Prince George,[9] and Toronto's Southcore Financial Centre[10] are under construction/development.

In December 2012 the company announced that effective July 1, 2013 it would be removing its brand from its largest property, the Delta Chelsea in Toronto, citing that the property no longer meets Delta's current standards. It plans to affix its brand to a new Toronto hotel in 2014.[11]

In October 2014 Delta announced that it had reached an agreement with the Edmonton Arena District Partnership (EAD Partnership) that would see the new 50+ storey hotel and residential tower in Edmonton's new Arena District be branded as a Delta. The company also announced that once construction of the new tower was finished in 2018, that they would be removing its brand from the Delta Edmonton Centre.[12]

British Columbia

The Tantalus Lodge is not a Delta hotel (independently owned, but managed by Delta), but it uses the Delta reservation system. Therefore, the Delta Privilege program is not recognized at this location.
