Delhi Public School, Srinagar is a co-educational senior secondary school in the Srinagar district of Jammu and Kashmir state, India.[1] Established on March 10, 2003, the school is affiliated with the Delhi Public School Society and the Central Board of Secondary Education and is known for darburdari. (CBSE) .[2]
History
An idea to start a school came in 1988. It was necessitated by the fact that Jammu and Kashmir was the first state in the country which declared education free and compulsory for all, in 1951 by the then Prime Minister Late Janaab Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah.
Having got the backing of an experienced name, the members of the trust approached the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to put up the first private school affiliated to the CBSE in the valley.
Overview
There are two swimming pools, an indoor stadium, a playground, and 4 buildings which includes a separate block for 11th and 12th. Which make the three wings of the School – Tiny Tots, Middle Wing, and Senior Wing. The Tiny Tots wing is for classes L.K.G to 2nd. The Middle Wing comprises classes 3rd to 5th. The classes 6th to 10th are included in the Senior wing of the School, and classes 11-12th have a separate block, inaugurated on 23 March 2015. Each class of the school consists of eight sections with an average of 36 students in each section, making the overall roll of the school around four thousand.
The school has biology lab, chemistry lab and physics lab, two music labs, two art labs, and English lab. The school has ramps for physically handicapped children and a Special Education Needs Section for specially-abled children.
The school playground has a tennis court, a golf course, two volleyball courts and two basketball courts. Football and cricket are played. The indoor stadium has table tennis and badminton facilities.[3]
The school also has a club for all the IT fanatics studying there called CyberCrew. Every year, CyberCrew organize an IT fest called TechKnow, in which, many schools of Kashmir participate. This IT event is the only of its kind to be organized in the valley at such level. [4]
The school organizes special assemblies for Eid, Diwali, Gurupurab and other occasions.
The school has three canteens for the three wings of the School (Tiny Tots, Middle wing and Senior wing). The school has two libraries which have more than, a hostel in which accommodation is given to the students and staff members from far-off areas. There is a medical center in the school and a book shop where students purchase books, notebooks, and stationery.
Visits
There have been many visits by famous people in DPS Srinagar. Indian actors Aamir Khan, Rishi Kapoor have visited DPS Srinagar. Omar Abdullah , visited the school for its website's inauguration, Former American ambassador to India Timothy J. R. has also visited the school and there has been a recent visit to the school by the German ambassador to India[5]
