Delaware County Firefighting
The firefighting services of Delaware County, Pennsylvania consist of twelve fire districts, composed of 71 individual fire departments in operation. There are currently over 2,000 active volunteer firefighters in the county.
A fire department in Delaware County responds to at least 300 emergency calls per year. Many of these departments also run both advanced life support and basic life support ambulances.
All of these departments are combination or fully volunteer with the exception of Upper Darby Fire Department and Chester City Fire Department, who are solely career staffed.
Delaware County also has its own state and nationally recognized fire academy located in Darby Township, Delaware County, which opened in 1992.
History
The fire service in Delaware County dates back to the time when organized fire departments first came into existence. The Delaware County fire service first came into being in the 18th century.
