The Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT), previously called Institute of Armament Technology (IAT), is a Deemed University specialising in Armament Technologies and is located in Girinagar near Pune, India.

History

This institute began as a military technical training school called the Institute of Armament Studies in 1952.[2] In the beginning, it was temporarily located inside the College of Military Engineering campus at Dapodi near Pune. In 1967, the institute was renamed to Institute of Armament Technology (IAT) when it was made an inter-service training institution and relocated to its present location in Girinagar, Pune.

In 1980, IAT was affiliated to the University of Pune which recognized eight post graduate courses offered by IAT for the award of Master of Engineering (ME) degree.[3]

IAT was granted deemed-to-be university status in 2006 and was renamed as Defence Institute of Advanced Technology on 1 April 2006. Thereafter it started awarding degree by itself (earlier it was awarded by University of Pune).

Courses

DIAT Deemed University Girinagar Pune conducts post graduate academic courses in science and technology for officers of the three services.

In order to meet the specific and futuristic training requirements of Armed Forces, DIAT (DU) was bifurcated to form MILIT (Military Institute of Technology) which conducts specialised training programmes for Officers of the three services and defence scientists.
